Display - Ricoh to Halve HD RPTV Cost
December 13, 2004
Ricoh has developed a technology to halve the cost of high-resolution rear projection TVs, and has successfully produced a 70" prototype. While corporate-use TV rollout is scheduled for 2007, there are also plans to introduction home-use models.

Ricoh is able to cut down production costs by placing a unique optical component between the LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) and lenses in its rear projection TVs, resulting in higher resolution. The higher resolution then makes it possible to reduce the size of LCDs used, which comprises the bulk of costs.
